Dorado Cares is a Puerto Rico public charity founded in 2022 with a clear mission: to deliver fast, efficient, high-impact support where it is needed most. They operate 100% volunteer-run, with no administrative drain on donations. Through initiatives in healthcare, education, food insecurity, social welfare, and disaster relief, they deploy capital quickly to strengthen communities and protect children.
We spoke with them about their work, the challenges facing the nonprofit sector on the island, and what brought them to the Puerto Rico Nonprofit Summit.
What has been one of the most significant impacts your organization has made in the nonprofit sector or the communities you support?
One of our most meaningful impacts was raising and granting $100,000 to unlock $1 million in FEMA funding for Hogar Santa Teresita, a home for abused children ages 3–8. That single intervention multiplied impact tenfold, helping secure the future of a vital child protection institution in Puerto Rico.
From your perspective, what is the biggest challenge nonprofits in Puerto Rico are facing today?
The biggest challenge is not passion, it is execution. Puerto Rico has many worthy missions, but limited donor capital demands discipline, speed, and measurable results. Nonprofits must operate as strong organizations, steward every dollar wisely, and move from intention to action faster.
How do you envision the future of the nonprofit sector on the island in the coming years?
I believe the future is collaboration and public-private partnerships. Government, philanthropy, business leaders, and nonprofits working together can solve problems faster and at greater scale. The strongest organizations will be those that combine compassion with operational excellence and accountability.
¿Why did you choose to be part of the Puerto Rico Nonprofit Summit, and what does this space mean to you?
I joined the Summit to learn, connect, and contribute. Puerto Rico's nonprofit leaders carry deep experience and commitment, and spaces like this help us share ideas that improve impact. For Dorado Cares, it is also a chance to show how urgency, efficiency, and execution can accelerate mission success.
How can nonprofits benefit from what your organization offers?
Nonprofits can benefit by partnering with Dorado Cares on programs, co-investing in community solutions, or leveraging our execution model to move projects faster. We are built to deploy capital efficiently, act with urgency, and help trusted partners reach more beneficiaries with greater measurable impact.
